“A clear, practical guide for people using the NHS to get the best out of it. Useful tips like having a book you write down all appointments and all results in so if there is illness etc acrosss different departments, you are not delayed while basic records are obtained (and also a backup if things get missed). Invaluable.” MTC
“Great book to help understand and take charge of your own health! I love that each chapter had takeaway bullet points, good way to go back for a summary if and when it’s needed. I will be recommending this book to family and friends :) BW
“Having worked in the NHS with medical professionals, this book was very helpful and insightful. Some people think their questions are silly, there's no silly question and it's very useful to have clear pathways, with no jargon. We need more books like this to show patients/people they are not alone and how to find the help they need and where to apply as there are so many confusing options out there. Would definitely recommend.” DH
“Navigating the health system can be challenging, the anxiety of being ill or supporting someone who is ill, the complexity of the system and the propensity for communication difficulties can combine to make a difficult situation horrendous. 'Navigating the Healthcare system' by Ina Farrelly provides guidance and support for people in this situation. This is a clear and insightful book, Ina writes with compassion, understanding and an expert knowledge of health systems.” MM
Navigating the NHS can often feel like trying to find your way through a maze, but thankfully, this brilliant book by an NHS insider offers a beacon of light. This guide helped me feel empowered with the knowledge and practical tips it provides, making it an invaluable resource for anyone interacting with the NHS.
The author's deep understanding and experience within the NHS are evident throughout the book. They share not just the mechanics of how the system works, but also the human stories behind it, which adds a personal and relatable touch. This blend of insider perspective and storytelling makes the book both informative and engaging.
One of the standout features of the book is its practical advice. The suggestion to maintain a dedicated notebook for appointments, with questions, answers, and treatment plans is a simple yet effective tip that is definitely going to make my interactions with healthcare professionals more organised and less stressful.
The book also sheds light on why certain processes within the NHS might seem convoluted. The author explains that it’s often not due to a lack of willingness to help, but rather the complexities involved in the system - or what’s needed to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
Overall, this book is more than just a guide; it’s a great companion for anyone needing to navigate the NHS. Its friendly tone and practical approach make it a must-read. Whether you're a patient, a carer, or simply someone who wants to understand the NHS better, this book is sure to provide clarity and confidence. Highly recommended! JB
As a practising health practitioner of 30 years I believe this book should be mandatory reading for all health clinicians, health administration staff, health technical staff, patients and their families. This easy to read, realistic and occasionally amusing book will provide a valuable map for best possible patient outcome while aiding the clinicians work workload and assisting with efficient cost cutting that will benefit clinicians patients and the tax payer. The book encompasses a wide spread of topics connected with the health system from the viewpoint of a clinician. It offers insight into the complex systems and associated challenges of the NHS. Anecdotes and personal memories exemplify the author's message and add a humane note to an otherwise rather dry and difficult topic. Moyna
